Outpaint beyond the original frame to change the shape of a photo without cropping it.
Choose Original, 16:9, 9:16, 4:3, 3:4, 3:2, 2:3 or 1:1 as the target shape. The canvas grows to that ratio instead of cutting anything away.
Expand by 1.25x, 1.5x or 2x. A small step adds breathing room around the subject, while 2x builds a much larger scene with the original kept in the center.
Bria Expand reads the edges of your photo and continues textures, lighting and perspective into the new area. Skies, floors and walls carry on instead of stopping at the old border.
Describe what should appear in the extended area, such as more sky or a wooden table. Descriptions must be in English; otherwise the scene is simply continued.
Every extension costs 3 credits, whatever ratio or expansion size you choose. The cost is shown before you click, and failed runs are refunded automatically to your balance.
Upload photos up to 10 MB in JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF or HEIC format. The final canvas is capped at 5000 x 5000 pixels, and larger images are scaled to fit.
Fix a crop or fit a new format without reshooting.
Expand a vertical photo to 16:9 for a website header, video thumbnail or presentation slide while keeping the subject centered.
Extend a landscape shot to 9:16 so it fills a phone screen in stories and short videos without black bars or awkward cropping.
Add extra sky, wall or table space around a product or person so headlines and buttons have somewhere to sit in ads and posters.
Recover a photo framed too closely, such as feet cut off at the bottom edge, by growing the canvas 1.25x and letting the AI fill the gap.
Upload, set the new shape, and generate.
Add one JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF or HEIC file up to 10 MB. Very large images are scaled down so the extended canvas fits within 5000 x 5000 pixels.
Pick a target aspect ratio and an expansion of 1.25x, 1.5x or 2x. Optionally describe the new area in English, such as 'calm ocean and sand'.
Click Extend Image, which costs 3 credits, and wait for Bria Expand to finish, usually under a minute. Download the result or find it in My Creations.
How to keep the new area believable.
At 1.25x or 1.5x, most of the frame is anchored by real pixels, so the new edges blend better. Use 2x when you need a lot of extra room.
Non-English descriptions are ignored and the AI continues the scene on its own. Short English phrases like 'more blue sky' or 'grass field' work well.
If a face or object is cut by the edge, the AI has to invent the missing part. Photos with simple edges, like sky, sand or walls, extend more convincingly.
Large expansions spread detail across a bigger canvas. Run the result through the Image Upscaler if you plan to print it or need sharper detail.
Answers about expanding images with AI outpainting.
It uses outpainting. You choose a target aspect ratio and an expansion size, your original image stays in the center, and Bria Expand generates new content around it that matches the existing scene.
Each extension costs 3 credits, regardless of the ratio or expansion size. The cost appears before you click, and if a generation fails the credits are refunded automatically. You need to be signed in to use it.
You can choose Original, 16:9, 9:16, 4:3, 3:4, 3:2, 2:3 or 1:1, and expand by 1.25x, 1.5x or 2x. The finished canvas is limited to 5000 x 5000 pixels, so very large uploads are scaled to fit.
Yes, add an optional description, but write it in English. Non-English text is ignored and the AI continues the scene automatically, which often works well for skies, landscapes and plain backgrounds.
One image per extension in JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF or HEIC format, up to 10 MB. Sharp, well-exposed photos give the AI more detail to continue at the edges.
Busy edges, people cut off by the frame and very large expansions are harder to continue. Try a smaller expansion, a short English description, or a photo with simpler content near the borders.
